24/7 Hotline: 201-487-2227 | Chat

Are you passionate about sexual violence prevention and supporting survivors? We are always looking for interested, committed volunteers to become trained advocates.

Volunteer advocates staff our 24/7 hotline (phone and chat), accompany survivors and loved ones to medical and legal proceedings, conduct community education and training, support and staff our awareness events, and help with office/clerical tasks.

Volunteer Pre-qualifications

Since working in the field of sexual violence can be challenging, we realize that this type of volunteering may not be for everyone. Individuals interested in volunteering complete a screening process that includes an application, resume, references, and an in-person interview.

Applicants must:
  •   Be at least 18 years of age
  •   Have their own transportation
  •   Be comfortable discussing emergency contraception as an option with survivors
  •   Live in Bergen County or immediate surrounding area
  •   Commit to at least one year of service
  •   Commit to the mission of the YWCA.

48 Hours of Training

Prospective volunteers must complete a mandatory 48 hours of training held over the course of approximately eight weeks. This training equips volunteers with the knowledge and skills required work directly or indirectly with survivors and their loved ones. It also prepare volunteers for work in the office and in the community.

Supervision & Certification

Volunteer advocates are provided with ongoing supervision, training, and support. They are also expected to participate in the statewide Confidential Sexual Violence Advocate (CSVA) Certification program. We greatly value our volunteers and their commitment! If you are interested in becoming a healingSPACE volunteer, call 201-881-1750 or email [email protected] to speak with staff about this opportunity.
